- Γράφτηκε από τον John Lennon, που το εμπνεύστηκε από μία φράση του ηθοποιού Peter Fonda, καθώς οι δυο τους μαζί με τον George Harrison “ταξίδευαν”. Ο George όμως είχε άσχημο “ταξίδι” και κόντευε να πεθάνει. Τότε ο Fonda του είπε "I know what it's like to be dead". Αυτό έδωσε στον Lennon την ιδέα για το τραγούδι και άρχισε να το γράφει αμέσως.
- Ο Fonda στα δέκα του χρόνια, είχε (από ατύχημα) αυτοπυροβοληθεί και βρέθηκε πολύ κοντά στο θάνατο. Αυτό εννοούσε με τη φράση "I know what it's like to be dead".

- Η Melanie (Safka), έγινε γνωστή από το τραγούδι "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma", που το τραγούδησε στο φεστιβάλ του Woodstock κάτω από τη βροχή.
- Όταν η βροχή σταμάτησε, ο κόσμος από κάτω, άναψε κεριά για να της δείξει έτσι, ότι όλα είναι εντάξει. Με αυτό τον τρόπο, της έδωσαν την ιδέα να γράψει αυτό το τραγούδι.

- Ο Young έγραψε το τραγούδι αυτό, για την ηθοποιό Carrie Snodgress, που εκείνη την περίοδο ήταν η σύντροφός του. Χώρισαν μετά από λίγα χρόνια και η Carrie δεν μπόρεσε να ασχοληθεί με την καριέρα της όπως χρειαζόταν. Πέθανε το 2004.
- Ο Jack Nitzsche, που έπαιζε πιάνο με τους Rolling Stones, έβγαινε μαζί της μετά τον χωρισμό της από τον Young, αλλά τον μήνυσε το 1979, γιατί την χτύπησε με την κάνη ενός όπλου.
- Μερικοί δυσανασχετούν για τη λέξη "Maid". Ο Young όμως το έγραψε στο πνεύμα του θρύλου του Robin Hood και της Maid Marion.

- Αυτό γράφτηκε για την Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean) που πέθανε το 1962. Το κερί, συμβολίζει τη σύντομη ζωή της. Ο στιχουργός του Elton, Bernie Taupin, εμπνεύστηκε το τραγούδι από μία φράση της Janis Joplin.
- Ο Elton έπαιξε αυτό το τραγούδι στην κηδεία της Πριγκίπισσας Diana το 1997 και άλλαξε το "Goodbye Norma Jean" σε "Goodbye England's Rose." Μετά την κηδεία, το ηχογράφησε ξανά με τίτλο "Candle In The Wind '97" και το αφιέρωσε στην Diana. Μέσα σε ένα μήνα, έγινε σε πωλήσεις, το Νο. 1 single όλων των εποχών και τα κέρδη διατέθηκαν σε φιλανθρωπικούς σκοπούς.

- Πρόκειται για τον ηθοποιό Montgomery Clift, ("A Place in the Sun", "From Here to Eternity") και την ταραχώδη ζωή του.
- Ο Clift αναφέρεται και σε άλλα τραγούδια. Ένα απ’ αυτά, είναι και το "Monty Got a Raw Deal" των R.E.M. από το album "Automatic for the People", του 1992.
- Ο Monty είχε προβλήματα με το αλκοόλ και το ατύχημα που αναφέρεται στο τραγούδι, συνέβη το 1956, καθώς γύριζε στο σπίτι του από ένα πάρτι στο σπίτι της Elizabeth Taylor, η οποία του έσωσε τη ζωή. Πέθανε το 1966 και ο θάνατός του έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως: " the slowest suicide" στην ιστορία του κινηματογράφου.

- Πρόσωπα και πράγματα που αναφέρονται στο τραγούδι: Mott the Hoople, Life, Monopoly, Twister, Risk, Fred Blassie, Elvis Presley, Moses, Sir Isaac Newton, και Charles Darwin.
- Χρησιμοποιήθηκε στην ταινία “Man On the Moon”/1999 με τον Jim Carrey, που αφορά στη ζωή του Andy Kaufman. (Οι R.E.M. έκαναν το soundtrack και η ταινία πήρε τον τίτλο της από αυτό το -προγενέστερο της ταινίας- τραγούδι των R.E.M.).
