Ο Lars ήταν εξαρχής στους Metallica. Στην ουσία αυτός σχημάτισε το group το 1980 όταν αποφάσισε να φτιάξει ένα δικό του συγκρότημα βάζοντας μια αγγελία στο περιοδικό “Recycler” στην οποία απάντησε ο James Hetfield.
To καλοκαίρι του 1981 σχηματίζονται οι Metallica στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο, με μέλη τους Lars Ulrich (ντραμς), James Hetfiled (φωνητικά, rhythm κιθάρα, μπάσο) και Lloyd Grant (lead κιθάρα)….
